Source: Daily Graphic Ghana - Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council (NPC), Mr Francis Azumah, has appealed to the media to be fair and circumspect in their reportage before, during and after the 2016 general election.

He said the work of journalists was to contribute to the strengthening and deepening of the country’s democracy and promote peace.
Mr Azumah said this at a seminar organised by the council for the media in Accra yesterday.

The seminar was also to solicit the views and opinions of the journalists on the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The members of the NPC took the opportunity to interact with the media and urged them to demonstrate a good sense of professionalism to further strengthen the perception of the international community about Ghana as the beacon of hope for Africa.

The Chairman of the NPC, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, said the lessons of the 2012 elections should not be lost on the media, the reason why the Peace Council decided to meet journalists to undertake a review of the 2012 elections.

He said the move was to chart a common path for peaceful elections in 2016.

He explained that stakeholders had been categorised into four groups namely the state of governance institutions, the media and the political parties, as well as civil society groups.

Prof. Asante said the state governance institutions had been engaged, while the others would be engaged in the coming weeks.

He said among the agenda was to identify areas of success and challenges, areas of interventions for the media and identify opportunities for the media and other stakeholders to collaborate.
