Media urged to act with prudence ahead of November polls

Source: Daily Graphic Ghana - The Chairman of the Eastern Regional Peace Council, Right Reverend Dr Emmanuel Twum–Baah, has encouraged the media to act with prudence before, during and after the 2016 general election.
In so doing, he has tasked the media to be circumspect in their reportage throughout the electoral process.

This, he said, would ensure that the nation continued to remain peaceful before, during and after this year’s election.

Right Reverend Twum-Baah said this during a workshop for the media practitioners in Koforidua in the Eastern Region. It was on the theme: “Cooperating for Peace, the Ghana Agenda.”

Threat to peace

Right Reverend Dr Twum–Baah said certain reportage by the media could be a threat to the peace of the nation.

He, therefore, urged media practitioners not to collaborate with people seeking unfair advantage through unjust means.

He said the council found it difficult to comprehend why there were pockets of electoral violence in the region and attributed the situation to the misrepresentation of facts by the media.

Act with prudence

Right Reverend Twum–Baah further urged the media to use their medium to encourage Ghanaians to rise above personal interests and eschew the violence in the larger interest of society.

“You must be less sensational, especially in the communities where there are struggles and various forms of violence such as ethnicity and chieftaincy disputes. We implore you to join hands and resources to promote fairness, justice and education of the citizenry with other collaborators in the absence of adequate party education. Let good journalism lead to peaceful, general election that our brothers and sisters of other African nations may learn from,” he added.

For his part, the Paramount Chief of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sackitey II, appealed to the media to embrace politicians who play a very crucial role in peace making.

He also advised the media to give accurate report and go by the principles and ethics of the journalism profession.
