Source: citifmonline.com - General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has asked members of the party to report for deletion the names of supposed members of the opposition New Patriotic Party in the their biometric register.
Some members of the NDC have accused parliamentary aspirants of registering non-NDC members in order to shore up their chances in the impending primaries.
In the Ledzokuku constituency of the Greater Accra Region for instance, some irate members set ablaze their voters’ register because according to them, it had names of non-NDC members.

The primary, which was initially scheduled for November 7, has been postponed to November 21, 2015, after an executive National Executive Meeting (NEC) held on Monday.

Announcing the postponement at the party’s headquarters on Monday, the General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia asked party supporters who have evidence of NPP members being registered, to provide evidence for their names to be removed.

He explained among others, that the decision to postpone the primaries will give the party ample time to address concerns about the register and other outstanding issues in order to have a peaceful and credible election.

"In every voter registration process, the validation period is for the provisional register to be returned to the localities where they were captured for the people there to confirm whether there have been any mistakes. If so, then they could be corrected. If there are people who have died in the process; that is also the means of identifying them. If there are people whose names shouldn’t be in the register that is the time they are deleted before a final register is produced.

"So we are excited that our people have shown vigilance; but because of inadequate information, some people vented their frustration about inaccuracies in the register and decided to burn the register.

"It has not affected the process at all, and we have still sent teams to educate them about the importance of exhibition and we have printed fresh registers and sent them.”

He added “Happily; the registers have been distributed to the branches and the branch executives are going through the process of identifying where the inaccuracies are; and the process is ongoing. If you have problems with the register, this is the time to pinpoint the problem. We have heard several rumours that NPP persons have had their names on our register and so on; if you know any NPP person whose name is on the register, this is the time to report for deletion” he advised.

Meanwhile the General Secretary has dismissed suggestions that the postponement of the election date is to avoid a clash with a festival in parts of the Volta Region, which is the party’s stronghold.
